Core Aeration

Why Aerate Your Lawn?

Here in NW Indiana, from Dyer and St John, all the way into Porter County, we have mostly clay based soil. Clay makes a great base for a lawn when it comes to structure, but it does lack some of the nutrients that other rich soil types contain naturally.

On top of that, in most residential lawn settings, the naturally existing layer of fertile topsoil may have been removed or buried during excavation of the basement or footings. This means your nice sodded or seeded lawn is actually growing in subsoil that is more dense, and higher in clay content making it much less likely to sustain a healthy lawn.

All of this contributes to the overarching problem with our soil: Compaction.

Compacted Soils

Walking, playing and mowing will compact soil and stress lawns. Raindrops and irrigation further compact the soil, reducing large air spaces where roots readily grow. Couple these with our ever-changing weather extremes (It may be 80 degrees on April 12 and 31 degrees and snowing on April 15 as we experienced just recently) and you have a high probability of having a lawn as hard as your concrete driveway.

Compaction is greater on heavy clay soils than on sandy soils, and it is greatest in the upper 1 to 1 1/2 inches of soil, right where the roots of the lawn thrive.

What Does Compaction Do?

Compacted soil prevents turf from establishing a healthy root structure. This is important to note because the base of the lawn (roots), dictate how the top (grass blades) will appear in color and thickness. A thicker and healthier base will naturally allow for the support of an even thicker and healthier top!

How Does Aeration Help?

Aeration can help relieve soil compaction, allowing your grass to grow deeper roots and make better use of water and fertilizer. It’s a simple process that pulls cores of soil from the lawn, allowing the soil to “relax” and spread out. This creates more water and airflow through it. Your grass roots will love it!

Lawns can be aerated in Spring or in Fall. Our technician can let you know which time of year would be right for your particular situation. Give Midwest Green Lawn a call today to get scheduled!

You may also consider adding fresh lawn seeding in conjunction with your core aeration. We’d be glad to help.
